Shows personality, status or job.
What time period they are in.

facial expressions and body language-
What they are feeling.
How a character feels about another character.

positioning within a frame-
Draw attention to something important.
Show relationships between characters.

lighting and colour-
Highlight important characters.
Make character looks certain ways e.g. mysterious.
Reflect emotions.
